Making Gold and Silver Purchases in the District of Columbia

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. It was founded after the American Revolution for the purpose of being the seat of the federal government.

The city was named after George Washington, the commander and chief of colonial forces during the war and the first President of the United States.

The city came into being in 1790 after the U.S. Congress passed the Residence Act, creating a national capital. George Washington selected the location along the Potomac River and Washington, D.C. has the distinction of being the only city in the U.S. that is not located within any of the 50 states, as it is located on land between the states of Virginia and Maryland.

Washington is known not only as the seat of the U.S. government but as the location of numerous monuments, the Smithsonian Museum (which offers free admission) and significant tourism. Washington, D.C. is also home to the U.S. Mint.

Sales Tax on Gold and Silver in the District of Columbia

There are no tax exemptions for the sale of precious metals in the District of Columbia or Virginia. Therefore, all coins, bullion, gold, and silver are subject to 5.75% sales tax in D.C. while Virginia has a 6% sales tax.

Maryland has a sales tax of 6% but precious metal bullion and coins are exempt from sales tax if over $1,000 in a single transaction.
