It is the county seat of Woodbury County, in which it lies; although part of the city spills over into Plymouth County. Sioux City is a cultural center. It is the location of many buildings of historic and cultural interest, including the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

The city is named after the Sioux, a grouping of Native American nations. The first Europeans to reach the area in which it is located were French and Spanish fur trappers in the 18th century. The famous Lewis and Clark expedition passed by the city, some time in 1804.

Sioux City appeared to have been first settled in 1854. It was incorporated in 1857 and soon became an important import-export hub. It also flourished as a major way-station for prospectors traveling to the gold fields in Wyoming and Mormons journeying to Salt Lake City.
