Affectionately known as the “Golden Gate City”, San Francisco is a hub of cultural and commercial activity nesting in North California. Covering an area of about 46.89 square miles, it is the fourth most populous city in California, with 884,363 residents as of 2017. The city derives its name from St. Francis of Assisi, the medieval Italian cleric.
In 1776, the Spanish established the first European settlement in San Francisco and the town grew to become the largest city on the West Coast, after the California Gold Rush of 1849 brought an influx of prospectors.
The city is famous for many things, including the Golden Gate Bridge, built in 1937, which spans the mile-wide “Golden Gate” strait that links San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean.
San Francisco also has the dubious distinction of being the first American city to pass an “ugly law” that made it illegal for anyone to appear in public who was “diseased, maimed, mutilated, or in any way deformed, so as to be an unsightly or disgusting object.”
The city is among the nation’s wealthiest. In 2017, GDP in the San Francisco metropolitan area grew 3.4 percent to $501 billion. Its financial prominence is marked by the presence of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. In addition, Montgomery Street in the Financial District is called the "Wall Street of the West."
Sales Tax on Gold and Silver in San Francisco
California levies sales and use taxes on precious metals, but there are exemptions. In San Francisco, sales taxes on bullion sales include the state tax of 7.5% plus county tax of 1.25%, amounting to 8.75%. If used as a medium of exchange, coins are not subject to tax, even though the exchange value may differ from the face value. However, if the coin transaction is made as an investment or as an acquisition of collector’s items, it is taxed.
In general, sales of gold and silver are subject to tax. However, bulk sales of monetized bullion, non-monetized gold or silver bullion, and numismatic coins are exempt from both the sales tax and the use tax, provided the total market value sold in a single transaction is $1,500 or more, according to Article 7, Regulation 1599 of the California Sales and Use Tax Regulations.
