Richmond is the capital of the state of Virginia. The city is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. Incorporated in 1742, Richmond has been an independent city since 1871. In 2016, its population was estimated at 223,170, making the city the fourth-most populous metropolis in Virginia.
The city was christened “Richmond” by its founder, an English planter named William Byrd, who chose that name for the settlement because the view it offered of the James River reminded him of a similar perspective of the River Thames from the English town of Richmond. Richmond spreads over an area of 62.5 square miles.
Richmond’s development took place as explorers from Jamestown ventured further up the James River. A settlement was briefly established in 1609 and in 1610–1611. However, the present city of Richmond was founded in 1737 and incorporated as a town in 1742. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the second and permanent capital of the Confederate States of America.
