The second largest city in North Carolina, Raleigh is also the state capital as well as the seat of Wake County. Founded in 1792, Raleigh is 142.8 square miles in size, ranking it #61 in the U.S., and has a population of 465,000, ranking it #42 among other cities in the U.S. Its metropolitan statistical area has a population of just over 1.2 million.
Identified as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, Raleigh is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, the founder of the lost Roanoke Colony in 1585. Raleigh is also part of the Research Triangle Park (RTP) and home to North Carolina State University. Other members of RTP include Duke University (in Durham) as well as University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (in Chapel Hill).
Similar to cities such as Jackson, MS, Columbus, OH and the nation’s capital Washington, DC Raleigh is one of the earliest planned cities in the U.S., meaning it was basically carved out of a tract of land with city streets planned in order to serve as a state capital.
Raleigh escaped much of the damage inflicted on other southern cities during the American Civil War. Its population fluctuated throughout the turn of the 20th century and through the depression of the 1930s. It was not until the opening of RTP in 1959 that Raleigh began experiencing a relative population boom that continues to this day.
Today, Raleigh is considered one of the best places to live in the U.S., primarily because of its favorable business climate and overall quality of life.
