Providence is the capital of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. With an estimated population in 2017 of 180,393, it is also the most heavily populated metropolis in the state.
The city was founded in 1636 as Providence Plantations by Roger Williams, who had been forced to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams is said to have given the settlement its name as a mark of gratitude for "God's merciful Providence" in directing him to the location.
The name is also given to the Providence River, at the mouth of which the city lies. Although today Providence is undoubtedly the capital of Rhode Island, that was a position long in being realized. Initially, each of the five counties had its own capital. In 1854, the number fell, with just Newport and Providence having capital cities. Then, in 1901, Providence officially became the state capital.
Providence’s position as the state’s chief city has made it the location of seven institutions of higher learning and eight hospitals. In 2009, to emphasize its benign environment for education and the arts, it started a marketing campaign to brand itself as the "Creative Capital."
