New Hampshire is one of six states in the northeastern region of the United States, known as New England. It has borders with Canada and other New England states.
The Canadian province lies to the north, while to the south is Massachusetts; in the west is Vermont, and in the east lies the state of Maine and the Atlantic.
Covering a mere 9,349 square miles, New Hampshire is the 46 largest – 5th smallest – U.S. state in geographical size. It is the 10th least populous of the 50 states, with a population estimated in 2017 at 1,342,795.
The capital of New Hampshire is Concord, although that city is not the largest in the state; that status goes to Manchester. The state is well known as the host of the first primaries in the U.S. presidential election cycle.
