Today, with a population of 595,351, the city is the most populous in the state of Wisconsin, the fifth most populous in the Midwest, and the second most populous and the second most densely populated in the Midwest.
In addition, it sits as the 31st most populous city in the United States. Because it sits on Lake Michigan, Milwaukee was originally designed to be a port city, and, by the mid-1800s, shipped the most wheat in the entire country (aided by Wisconsin’s prolific wheat-growing capabilities).
Today, however, the city is known more for its brewing and manufacturing industries and is the home of six Fortune 500 companies. Lake Michigan serves as a recreational focal point, and the city also boasts a number of festivals every year, as well as a number of museums and historical landmarks.
Sales Tax on Gold and Silver in Milwaukee
Wisconsin as a whole levy a sales tax of 5% on most purchases, including those of “tangible property.” While some states have exemptions for certain purchases of gold and silver, Wisconsin does not.
As a result, all precious metal purchases, including coins, collectibles, and currency, are subject to the sales tax. Even precious metal bullion is considered “tangible property” and is subjected to the state sales tax.
