Memphis is a city located along the Mississippi River in the southwestern part of the state of Tennessee. Memphis is one of the most historic and cultural cities in the southern part of the U.S. and offers a variety of landscapes and neighborhoods. With a city population of 653,000 and a metropolitan area population of 1.3 million, Memphis is one of the largest cities in the south.
The land that is known today as Memphis was first “discovered” by Hernando de Soto, a Spanish conquistador, in 1541 and was sought after by the Spanish, French and British. The Memphis we know today was founded in 1819 by three well-known Americans – John Overton, James Winchester and the soon-to-be president of the United States, Andrew Jackson.
After the American Civil War, Memphis grew rapidly and toward the 20th century became a major player in the worldwide cotton and lumber markets. Memphis also played a role during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, including Martin Luther King’ assassination at the Lorraine Motel and the opening of the National Civil Rights Museum.
A major transportation and logistics hub, Memphis is home to FedEx – making Memphis International Airport the second-busiest cargo airport in the world – and has operations of DHL at the airport as well.
Memphis is home to three Fortune 500 companies; FedEx, AutoZone, and International Paper. In addition, Memphis houses the operations of other major corporations, such as Cargill Cotton, Gibson Guitars, American Residential Services, and First Horizon National Corporation.
