Manchester is a large city in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. It is the most heavily populated metropolis in New Hampshire, with an estimated population of 111,196 (2017 est.). Manchester is the seat of government of Hillsborough County, a position it shares with Nashua, New Hampshire’s second largest city.
Manchester lies on both banks of the Merrimack River, which empties one hundred miles northeast into the Atlantic. The town is named after Manchester in England. It was originally called Derryfield.
However, in 1810, Samuel Blodgett, a lawyer, industrialist, and financier, got the town renamed. Blodgett hoped it would become a great industrial hub like the original Manchester in England, said to be the world's first industrialized city.
At that time, Blodgett’s friend and fellow industrialist, Benjamin Prichard, built the Amoskeag Mills, which soon became the largest cotton textile plant in the world. Manchester continues to foster a business-friendly environment. It also ranks highly for affordability, livability, and access to educational facilities.
