The largest city in the commonwealth of Kentucky, Louisville was founded in 1778 by American surveyor and soldier George Rogers Clark. It was named after King Louis XVI of France and is situated beside the Falls of the Ohio, a major obstruction to river traffic between the upper Ohio River and the Gulf of Mexico.
The city is also known as the home of Muhammad Ali, the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the University of Louisville.
During the American Civil War, Louisville was a significant location for the Union and by the end of the war, the city had not been attacked. By the later part of the 19th century, the city was severely damaged by an F4 tornado, almost completely destroying its downtown area.
Today, Louisville is home to several companies or has major offices in the city, including KFC, ADP, CafePress, Thorntons, UPS Airlines, Papa John’s Pizza and GE Appliances. In addition, two Ford plants reside in the Louisville area and the city is also a major center of the American whiskey industry, where approximately 1/3 of all bourbon in the U.S. comes from Louisville.
