Lansing is only the fifth-largest city in the state, but it serves as the state capital and covers portions of three counties (Ingham County, Eaton County, and Clinton County). Its 2010 population was 114,297.
The capital of Michigan since 1847, Lansing and its surrounding area (referred to as Mid-Michigan, or the Lansing Metropolitan Area), perhaps naturally serves as a cultural and governmental center.
As an educational hub, it also houses a number of schools, including Michigan State University College of Law, two medical schools, and a veterinary school. As far as its government offerings, Lansing houses the state Capitol, a federal court, the state Supreme Court, and the Court of Appeals.
What Lansing is not, however, is a county seat, making it unique among the nation’s state capitals. Lansing’s economy thrives off of education, government, healthcare, and automobile manufacturing. Its automotive industry includes General Motors’ headquarters. The city also serves as the headquarters for four insurance companies.
