As the fourth-largest city in the state, Kenosha sits on Lake Michigan and serves as a bedroom community for the Chicago-Milwaukee area. The city’s 2013 population was 99,889, while the city also sits as part of the Chicago Combined Statistical Area.
Kenosha is the seat of the county by the same name. Kenosha has undergone a number of name changes, originally known as Pike Creek and Southport before taking its current name in 1850. For a number of years, Kenosha produced automobiles as one of its primary economic pursuits.
Today, however, almost half of the city’s residents work outside Kenosha County in jobs such as healthcare and manufacturing in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. Tourism is also a driving economic factor in the city, thanks in part to the presence of 21 locations that are part of the National Register of Historic Places and thanks to the presence of three museums.
A rapid increase in housing between 1990 and 2005 reflected a conclusion reached by WalletHub in 2015 that Kenosha is one of the best cities in the country for first-time homebuyers.
