Joliet may be named after the French-Canadian explorer, Louis Jolliet or it may be a corruption of “Juliet.” In the 17th century, Jolliet camped on a hillock close to the Des Plaines River, a few miles away from the present-day city of Joliet that became known as Mound Jolliet.
Much later in 1834, a certain James Campbell founded a village on the east side of the Des Plaines and named it after his daughter Juliet. In 1845, the Juliet villagers changed the name to Joliet. The village was incorporated as a city in 1852.
In recent times, Joliet is best known for its avenues of entertainment. These include Harrah's Casino, Joliet Slammers Baseball Stadium and the Hollywood Casino. Joliet is also the locale of the Rialto Square Theatre, known as the “Jewel of Joliet”, which has been described as one of the world's ten most beautiful theaters.
