The site of Indianapolis was selected for the state capitol in 1820 after the Delaware Indians surrendered these lands, positioning the area as the new seat of government. Notably, the name Indianapolis is derived from the State name of Indiana meaning “land of the Indians” or “Indian Land” and “polis” from the Greek word for city.
Having the 27th largest economic region in the U.S., Indianapolis’ diverse economy ranges from finance and insurance, manufacturing, professional and business services, education and health care, government, to wholesale trade. It has also developed a niche in sports and auto racing, being best known for the celebrated Indianapolis 500.
During the mid-20th century, Indianapolis framed itself as a tourism destination for sports, building tennis, track, soccer, and football facilities, which revitalized its business district.
Known also for its philanthropy, Indianapolis has developed a bustling cultural oasis, which includes The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, hailed as the world's largest, the renowned Indianapolis Zoo, and a host of other historically and educationally relevant sites such as Indiana University-Purdue University, as well as a vibrant public art scene.
