Duluth is the county seat of Saint Louis County in Minnesota and, with a population of 86,293, the 4th largest municipality in the state. Lying on Lake Superior’s north shore, at the westernmost point of the Great Lakes, Duluth is also a major port city, the largest on the Great Lakes.
It shares a harbor with Superior, Wisconsin and the two port cities are together referred to as the “Twin Ports.” The twinned port is linked to the Atlantic Ocean 2,300 miles away by the Great Lakes Waterway and the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
The city gets its name from Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, a French soldier and explorer who is the first European known to have visited the area. His name was later anglicized as “Du Luth”, with the two words being later combined.
Duluth is a well-known tourist destination. The city is home to the Aerial Lift Bridge, which runs across the Duluth Ship Canal; the Great Lakes Aquarium, which is the only all-freshwater aquarium in the U.S.; and Minnesota Point (known also as Park Point), the world's longest freshwater baymouth bar, which spans 6 miles. A baymouth bar is a deposit of sand and silt that forms across the mouth of a bay.
