Dover is Delaware’s second most populous city and the capital of the state. Dover was named after William Penn of Dover in Kent, England, founded on the St. Jones River in 1683 and incorporated in 1717. Dover boasts a population of nearly 40,000 residents.
Dover is known for its low cost of living, contributing to its being one of the fastest growing areas in the state. Employers in Dover include Dover air force base, Kraft Foods, and Procter & Gamble. NASCAR holds races at Dover International Speedway, which together with its hotel and casino revenue contribute millions of dollars to Dover's economy.
A large portion of the state's government is located in and around Dover. The city's central square, The Green, is the heart of Dover's historic district and location of the Delaware Supreme Court and Kent’s County Courthouse and has been the site of many patriotic events. Dover was home to a large Quaker community, and part of the Underground Railroad.
