Colorado Springs is the largest city by area in Colorado as well as the county seat and the most populous municipality of El Paso County, in the state of Colorado. The city started as Fountain Colony and got its name "Colorado Springs" in 1872, the year it was officially incorporated. The year before that the Colorado Springs Company had initiated the development of the town of Fountain Colony, close to Colorado City. In 1873, Colorado Springs superseded Colorado City as the County Seat of the El Paso County. It has retained that position to this day.
