Local Gold and Silver Dealers in Baton Rouge, LA

Baton Rouge, which translates into “red stick” in French, is the state capital of Louisiana and its second-largest city. With a population of 230,000, the metropolitan area is home to more than 830,000 residents.

Baton Rouge is known as a major industrial, petrochemical, medical and research center in the southern part of the U.S. It is home to the state’s primary university, Louisiana State University as well as Southern University.

French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, during an expedition up the Mississippi River in 1699, saw a 30-foot red pole, apparently marking the boundary between the hunting grounds of two native tribes. The city was named after this “red stick.”

Baton Rouge was incorporated as a city in 1817 and the city became Louisiana’s new state capital in 1846. The state capital was briefly moved to New Orleans after the American Civil War but was moved back to Baton Rouge in 1882. In the 1950s, the Baton Rouge area experienced an economic boom due to the growth of the petrochemical industry. The boom continued into the 1990s and early 2000s and was based partially on technology.

After Hurricane Katrina, Baton Rouge experienced an influx of almost 200,000 people, some of whom stayed while others moved on or back to New Orleans. Economically, Baton Rouge is the furthest inland port of the Mississippi River able to accept ocean-going tankers and cargo carriers, making it a vital port for the state. In addition, ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Refinery is the country’s fourth-largest oil refinery as well as the world’s tenth-largest.
