A big city in a small state, Baltimore stands tall as a populous, historic, and vibrant port city. Founded by the state’s constitution as an independent city apart from any county, Baltimore still holds an important place.
This largest city in Maryland had a 2017 population of 611,648. As such, it is the 30th-largest city in the nation and exists as part of the 20th largest metropolitan area and a critical part of the Washington-Baltimore combined statistical area.
Today, the city boasts Johns Hopkins Hospital and University as its biggest employers, but it was originally an important city because of its second-largest seaport, which also served as the second most popular entry point for immigrants. Historically, the city also holds an important place, in keeping with Maryland’s own deep historic roots.
For example, it was the city where Francis Scott Key penned the “Star Spangled Banner,” where famous writers such as Edgar Allen Poe lived, and where some of the first National Register Historic Districts are located. Today, Baltimore’s economy thrives thanks to the continued success of its port, as well as a vibrant tourism industry.
Sales Tax on Gold and Silver in Baltimore
For almost all precious metal purchases in Maryland, there is a sales tax of 6%. Items that are subject to this tax include any purchases that are less than $1,000, all copper items, all items that are not legal currency in any nation, any numismatic coins, and any items that are made of silver and gold.
The one exception to the sales tax requirement is any purchase of precious metal bullion or coins that exceeds $1,000.
