In 1857, East and West Aurora came together and incorporated as the city of Aurora. To avoid any show of bias, many public buildings were built on Stolp Island, which lies in the middle of the Fox River.
By the mid nineteenth century, the city was a progressive, booming metropolis. In 1856, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built a roundhouse and locomotive shop in Aurora. The railroad company, subsequently, became the town's largest employer, a position it held until the 1960’s. By 1881, the city had all-electric street lighting, but it wasn’t until 1908, when it named itself the "City of Lights" that it appeared to mark the development.
Aurora has indeed been an enlightened community. The city openly supported abolitionism before the American Civil War and welcomed migrants shortly after the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Its socially progressive approach extended to women’s rights, welfare, education and religious tolerance. In 1851, the first free public-school district in Illinois was established and a high school for girls followed in 1855.
