Aurora started life in the late nineteenth century as the town of Fletcher, named after Donald Fletcher, a Canadian land speculator. Fletcher and his partners hoped that the new town would prosper because of its proximity to Denver.
However, the U.S. suffered an economic downturn. Called by various names – Silver Crash of 1893, Panic of 1893 – the economic depression resulted partly from a low commodity price. The crash apparently caused Fletcher to abscond, which he did leave the residents of the town with an obligation to make bond payments.
The bonds had been issued to establish a supply of portable water for the town. In 1907, the town was renamed Aurora, which, at the time, was the name of one of the neighborhoods making up the town of Fletcher.
