Steel union, ArcelorMittal in negotiations over looming layoffs
Chicagotribune - The ax continues to fall at steel giant ArcelorMittal USA plants as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic, with non-represented employees in the Region about to learn if they will be part of a companywide involuntary layoff.
The latest pending cutbacks in staff were announced as United Steelworkers and company officials continued to discuss layoffs on the represented side this week in light of a sharp decrease in orders from the automobile and other industries.
So far, it’s unknown how many on either the represented or union side will be impacted.
In a letter dated Wednesday, President and CEO John Brett said non-represented employees of ArcelorMittal USA, its subsidiaries and affiliates will be notified on April 23 if they will be among those laid off for an undetermined amount of time.
